The Epidemiology of Dengue Infection in Indonesia
Main Article Content
Dengue infection has been a major health problem in most tropical countries. Dengue is an arthropod-borne disease caused by four serotypes of the dengue virus. The clinical spectrum of dengue infection is wide, from asymptomatic to dengue shock syndrome due to severe plasma leakage. Indonesia is one of the countries thatcarry the highest burden of dengue in the world, both health and economic burden. In Indonesia, study shows that throughout the years, the incidence of dengue has remained high and affects multiple age groups; however, the case fatality rate has significantly declined. Early detection and management are essential to prevent mortality. The severity of dengue is related to the virus serotype, host factors, and environmental factors. Although dengue vaccination has been introduced, vector control is still the mainstay of prevention for dengue infection. The common prevention methods by vector control include environmental, biological, and chemical management.
